Microsoft 365 vs. Google Workspace: Which is better for small, fast-growing businesses?

By Jig Mehta, Digital Marketing Manager | Published 10 Jun 2025

As your business scales, the tools you choose can either accelerate growth or slow you down.

Two giants dominate the space! In the right corner weighing in at 2.5 trillion, the master of productivity… Microsoft (365)!

AND

In the left corner weighing in at 863 billion, the undisputed king of search… Google (Workspace)!

Microsoft 365 vs. Google Workspace: Which is better for small businesses

🧰 Core tools & features of Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace

Microsoft 365 includes Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and OneDrive. Google Workspace has their own version, Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet and Drive.

Both are really good tool sets, accomplishing enough for most businesses. Google Workspace wins out for simplicity, but Microsoft 365 wins out for advanced functionality which can be critical for data-heavy or document-heavy businesses.

Our verdict: If you are growing you need Microsoft 365.

💼 Scaling your business with Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace

Google Workspace is easy to deploy, agile and great for remote teams. Microsoft 365 offers deeper enterprise tools, such as SharePoint, Power Platform and advanced security features.

Our verdict: If you need an agile tech environment consider Google Workplace, however if you are a fast growing business, an enterprise grade solution such as Microsoft 365 makes the most sense.

🔐 Security & compliance: who wins out

While Google Workplace has robust security that can’t be sniffed at, Microsoft absolutely leads the way, with advanced threat protection and enterprise-grade compliance.

Our verdict: Sorry Google Workplace, Microsoft 365 pips you to the post.

🧑 User experience

Google does have the edge here on pure experience, it is clean, intuitive and easy for teams to adopt. Having said that, Microsoft’s applications have really powerful features that are not available with Google Workplace. Choosing the right experience really depends on how much data analysis or documentation management you’ll do in your business.

Our verdict: Google Workplace for simplicity, Microsoft 365 for business growth.

💸Pricing

Google Workplace comes in slightly cheaper but not really by much at all, especially when you consider in lots of scenarios Microsoft 365 includes desktop application, whereas Google Workplace is all cloud based.

Our verdict: You have to love a desktop application, Microsoft 365.

Overall who wins, Google Workplace or Microsoft 365

Google Workplace makes a compelling argument and absolutely has a space in the market for small businesses, that are not data heavy or document led.

But, if you are a fast growing business with ambitions of “greatness” 😂, Microsoft 365 is the direction that we would steer businesses towards. Its enterprise grade security, apps and tools have a huge amount of potential in supporting business growth.
